Field notes

What it is like to shoot in Melbourne

We filmed a higher-education recruitment series across three Carlton campuses, then covered a fintech summit at MCEC the same week. Melbourne's laneway architecture is unfair to other cities' B-roll budgets.

Our regular Melbourne workflow covers fintech, healthtech, and education. We crew with a local production assistant, a dedicated sound recordist, and a lighting team that knows the venues — including Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre — well enough to walk in cold and still finish on time.

Melbourne expertise

Filming at Melbourne's Premier Corporate Venues

Melbourne B2B production concentrates at three venues: MCEC at South Wharf for trade-show and conference scale, the Crown precinct ballrooms for high-end corporate and pharma KOL work, and a tier of repurposed industrial venues in Fitzroy and Collingwood for launch events. City of Melbourne film permits run 2 weeks; Yarra River foreshore work requires Melbourne Water clearance separately.

1. Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC)

South Wharf

MCEC's Plenary gives a 16m ceiling at the broadcast rigging grid with full 12G-SDI fibre infrastructure and an integrated 4K PTZ camera package we routinely augment with our own FX9 + DZOFilm Vespid primes. The Goldfields Theatre is our preferred KOL fireside venue — RT60 ~1.0s, full block-out, and house Sennheiser EW-DX wireless. Load-in via the Normanby Road dock takes 6 artics with 24-hour access. Power is 3-phase 400A per position. The exhibition halls run RT60 ~2.3s unoccupied and we always tent any KOL studio on the show floor. We've delivered multiple AusBiotech and Anaesthesia-related HCP events here.

2. Crown Palladium / Crown Aviary

Southbank

Crown's Palladium ballroom seats 1,500 banquet with a 7.8m ceiling and integrated rigging that handles a flown 6m wide LED wall comfortably. We use it primarily for awards-format productions and pharma incentive summits. Acoustically the room is warm (RT60 ~1.1s) and we capture clean DPA 4080s off lectern with overhead MKH-50 boom as redundant. Load-in via the Crown service road is constrained: the freight elevator is 2.7m wide and shared with hotel operations, so we book 4am bump-in windows. Power is 3-phase 200A per position. The Aviary on the 28th floor gives a Yarra skyline B-roll backdrop we shoot at golden hour for executive intros.

3. Plaza Ballroom

CBD / Collins Street

Plaza Ballroom at the Regent Theatre gives a 1920s ornate aesthetic that reads premium on camera for finance and pharma KOL fireside content. Ceiling is 6.5m at the chandelier — we always plan blocking to keep the chandeliers as bokeh rather than fighting them in frame. Acoustically the room is bright (RT60 ~1.4s on plaster walls) and we lay sound blankets behind camera and under talent. Load-in via Collins Street is the constraint: no dedicated dock, freight elevator at 2.1m wide, and a 30-minute loading zone permit only. Power is single-phase 32A per circuit. We always run a generator tie-in for any large lighting package above 6kW.

Melbourne weather swings 15°C in a single shooting day are routine, which means we cycle two camera bodies through climate adaptation and never rely on a single CFA sensor's white balance to hold across the day's takes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about hiring a videographer in Melbourne.

Corporate video production in Melbourne typically ranges from A$3,500 for a single-camera interview setup to A$22,000+ for a multi-day brand film shoot. Most B2B projects we deliver fall in the A$6,000–A$14,000 range, covering pre-production, a full shoot day, and professional post-production. We provide fixed pricing on every quote so there are no surprises on the invoice.
We can mobilise a full production crew in Melbourne within 24–48 hours for urgent briefs. Our crew is based locally and covers every major district and venue. For planned shoots we typically schedule 1–2 weeks ahead for proper pre-production and any required permit coordination.
Yes. Commercial filming in Melbourne requires permits from the City of Melbourne for shoots on council-managed land and public spaces. The Melbourne Film Office facilitates permits and coordinates with Victoria Police, VicRoads, and Parks Victoria as needed. For small crews with handheld equipment on public streets, no permit is typically required as long as there is no obstruction. Larger productions involving equipment, lighting, or road closures require advance applications, generally processed within 5–10 business days. We handle all permit applications, insurance requirements (minimum A$20 million public liability), and stakeholder notifications on your behalf. Film Victoria provides additional support for productions.
Absolutely. We regularly coordinate multi-country shoots for enterprise clients, covering up to 8+ countries per project. Melbourne serves as one of our key regional hubs, and we have trusted local crews in every major city worldwide. You get one point of contact, consistent brand quality, and a single consolidated invoice regardless of how many locations are involved.
Every project includes two full rounds of revisions at no extra cost. The first round covers structural edits — pacing, scene order, and content changes. The second round handles fine-tuning — colour grading adjustments, audio levels, text overlays, and final polish. Additional revision rounds can be arranged if needed and are quoted transparently upfront.
We deliver in every format you need. Standard deliverables include high-resolution MP4 (H.264 and H.265) for web and broadcast, plus optimised versions for LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, and internal platforms. We also provide ProRes masters for archival and further editing. All files delivered via secure cloud transfer within the agreed timeline.

Melbourne's Video Production Market

Melbourne is Australia’s second-largest city and a major commercial centre with strengths in financial services, technology, education, healthcare, and life sciences. The CBD along Collins Street and Bourke Street houses the headquarters of major institutions including ANZ, BHP, Rio Tinto, and National Australia Bank, along with the Australian offices of global consulting firms and law practices. Melbourne’s technology sector has grown rapidly, with companies like Canva, SEEK, REA Group, and Atlassian’s Melbourne office anchoring a thriving SaaS and enterprise tech ecosystem concentrated in the CBD, Cremorne, and Richmond. The pharmaceutical and life sciences sector is particularly strong in Melbourne, with CSL (one of the world’s largest biotech companies) headquartered in the city, alongside major research institutions like the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, the Burnet Institute, and the Monash University Clayton campus. Melbourne hosts major B2B events at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) in Southbank, the Crown Conference Centre, and the Melbourne Showgrounds. While Melbourne has a strong creative production industry, most companies focus on advertising, entertainment, and lifestyle content. The B2B enterprise niche — particularly for pharma and SaaS brands — is underserved.

Why Professional Video Delivers ROI

Melbourne’s position as Australia’s second business hub and the country’s biotech capital makes professional video essential for B2B brands competing nationally and across APAC. LinkedIn is the dominant professional platform in Australia, and video posts generate 5x more engagement than text. For Melbourne-based enterprises, video provides the content engine that drives demand generation, thought leadership, and employer branding across the Australian market and into Southeast Asia. A single shoot day at your Collins Street office or Cremorne tech campus can produce a brand film, executive interviews, 6–10 social clips, and internal communications content. The ROI case is particularly strong for Melbourne’s world-leading biotech sector, where medical education video, conference coverage, and HCP engagement content are mandatory as the industry embraces hybrid event formats. For SaaS companies competing with Sydney-based rivals, professional video establishes brand authority that resonates with enterprise buyers nationally.

Equipment & Crew

We shoot on cinema-grade Sony FX6 and FX9 camera systems paired with Zeiss and Sony G Master prime lenses. For conference and event work at the MCEC, Crown Conference Centre, the Melbourne Showgrounds, and the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins, we deploy multi-camera rigs with wireless audio systems (Sennheiser EW and DPA lavaliers). Our standard Melbourne crew consists of a director/camera operator, sound recordist, and production assistant, scaling to five or more. Melbourne’s variable weather requires adaptable equipment, and we carry all-weather protection, portable LED lighting, and battery backup systems for outdoor and mixed-condition shoots. All footage is backed up on-set to redundant drives, and post-production is handled in DaVinci Resolve and Adobe Premiere Pro with professional colour grading, audio mastering, and motion graphics.

Coverage Area

We cover all of Greater Melbourne without travel surcharges. Our regular shooting locations include the CBD (Collins Street, Bourke Street, Flinders Street), Southbank (home to the MCEC and Crown), Docklands, Cremorne and Richmond (Melbourne’s tech hub), St Kilda Road (office corridor), and South Melbourne. Key business districts we serve include the Carlton and Parkville biomedical precinct (housing the University of Melbourne, the Royal Melbourne Hospital, and CSL’s headquarters), Clayton (Monash University and the surrounding biotech cluster), and Port Melbourne. We cover Melbourne’s major conference and event venues including the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, the Crown Conference Centre, Melbourne Showgrounds, the Grand Hyatt Melbourne, and the Park Hyatt. Beyond the city, we extend to Geelong, Ballarat, and the Mornington Peninsula for clients with regional offices. For APAC projects, we coordinate crews in Sydney, Auckland, Singapore, and across the region.
