Field notes

What it is like to shoot in Shanghai

We crewed an automotive trade show at the National Exhibition and Convention Center with executive cutaways in a Lujiazui boardroom overlooking the Bund. Lead times on filming permits in Shanghai are real and we plan four weeks ahead as standard.

Our regular Shanghai workflow covers automotive, retail, and trade shows. We crew with a local production assistant, a dedicated sound recordist, and a lighting team that knows the venues — including National Exhibition and Convention Center — well enough to walk in cold and still finish on time.

Shanghai expertise

Filming at Shanghai's Premier Corporate Venues

Shanghai B2B production concentrates around three venues: NECC Shanghai in Hongqiao for trade-show scale (the largest exhibition complex in Asia), Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center on the Huangpu for finance and pharma KOL congresses, and Kerry Hotel Pudong for executive interview and KOL fireside formats. Shanghai Municipal Bureau permits run 15 working days; foreign-content filming requires SAPPRFT or equivalent clearance.

1. National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC) Shanghai

Hongqiao / Qingpu

NECC Shanghai's Halls 1–8 give 13m clear ceiling with 50t-rated 6m grid rigging and 3-phase 600A per position. It is the workhorse for CIIE (China International Import Expo) and major industrial trade. For pharma congresses (multiple CSCO-aligned events) we build KOL studios off the show floor using black duvateen on 5m uprights. Acoustically the halls run RT60 ~2.8s open. Load-in via the Zhuguang Road service entry takes 20+ artics simultaneously with no time restriction during bump-in. Power is 3-phase 600A per position. The venue is 14km west of central Shanghai; crew accommodation in Hongqiao rather than commuting from Lujiazui.

2. Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center

Pudong / Huangpu

Shanghai Expo Center gives 10m clear ceiling in the central halls with 4m grid rigging and 3-phase 400A per position. We use it for finance plenaries, pharma KOL congresses, and Belt and Road policy-adjacent work. Acoustic treatment in the auditorium is professional (RT60 ~1.0s) with integrated 4K SDI infrastructure tying into a venue-supplied control room. Load-in via the Bocheng Road dock takes 6 artics with 24-hour access. Power is 3-phase 400A per position. The Huangpu River B-roll plate from the venue's east terrace is a signature Shanghai cutaway we shoot at golden hour with the Pudong skyline as the backdrop.

3. Kerry Hotel Pudong

Pudong / Lujiazui

Kerry Hotel Pudong's Grand Ballroom gives a 7.5m ceiling with rigged points on a 3m grid and column-free 1,300 sq m clear span. We use it for pharma HCP advisory boards (multiple Roche, Novartis, and Pfizer APAC-aligned events) and finance KOL fireside content. Acoustically the ballroom is well-treated (RT60 ~0.9s) and runs clean DPA 6066s. Load-in via the Huamu Road service entry is constrained: freight elevator at 3.4m wide and 24-hour notice required. Power is 3-phase 200A per ballroom. The hotel's proximity to NECC and Pudong's pharma corridor (Roche, AstraZeneca) makes it the default KOL fireside venue for international medical affairs work.

Chinese pharma KOL deliverables for NMPA-aligned audiences need Simplified Chinese voiceover with name-card supers in Simplified Chinese characters; we capture credentialed cutaways as separate 4K ISOs to allow clean Chinese supers without typographic stacking issues.

Shanghai's Video Production Market

Shanghai is China's financial and commercial capital, home to the Shanghai Stock Exchange, the headquarters of major Chinese corporations, and the regional offices of virtually every Fortune 500 company. From the iconic skyline of Lujiazui to the creative agencies of Jing'an, B2B brands in automotive, pharma, financial services, and manufacturing compete for attention in the world's second-largest economy. The National Exhibition and Convention Center hosts China's largest trade fairs, and professional video content is essential for brands targeting the Chinese and wider APAC market.

Why Professional Video Delivers ROI

Chinese B2B audiences consume video at massive scale — WeChat, Douyin, and Bilibili drive billions of video views daily, and video content on LinkedIn China generates 4x higher engagement than static posts. For Shanghai's financial, automotive, and manufacturing sectors, a polished corporate film serves investor relations, trade show presentations, WeChat campaigns, and client communications. We deliver in every format — from vertical Douyin cuts to 4K broadcast masters — ensuring your production budget works across Chinese and international platforms.

Equipment & Crew

Our Shanghai crews shoot on Sony FX6 and RED Komodo cinema cameras with Zeiss CP.3 and Sony G Master lenses. We carry Aputure 600d lighting, DJI RS3 Pro stabilisers, Sennheiser wireless audio, and DJI Mavic 3 Pro drones for aerial work. Every setup is designed for Shanghai's diverse environments — from the glass towers of Pudong to the art deco elegance of the Bund, managing the city's variable weather and fast-paced corporate schedules.

Coverage Area

Our crew is based in Shanghai but we cover all of Eastern China — Beijing, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Nanjing, and Shenzhen. Multi-city China and APAC shoots are coordinated from our Shanghai hub, giving you one point of contact, consistent quality, and a single invoice.
